The message from Houston Dynamo head coach Ben Olsen was clear: the mistakes have been identified, and the lessons have been learned.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Noche de México clash at Shell Energy Stadium, Olsen acknowledged the costly errors that allowed Houston’s promising two-goal lead to disappear last weekend. Now, the Dynamo are preparing for a dangerous Sporting Kansas City side that thrives in attack and won’t need many invitations.
Sporting KC has been involved in high-scoring battles, scoring nine goals while conceding seven over its last three matches. Their attacking firepower will test one of MLS’s standout goalkeepers, Jonathan Bond, who has established himself among the league’s top five keepers this season. But even Bond can only do so much if Houston repeats the defensive lapses that turned a 2-0 advantage into a 2-2 draw after the 73rd minute last week.
The challenge is even greater with the Dynamo still missing several key players. Despite those absences, Houston enters Saturday determined to protect its home fortress and secure all three points in front of a Noche de México crowd.
The numbers give Houston plenty of confidence. The Dynamo remain second in the Western Conference with a 13-8-5 (W-L-D) record and 44 points—the second-highest total through 26 matches in club history. Since returning from the World Cup break, Houston has avoided defeat in 10 of its last 12 matches, including an unbeaten run at home, where the club owns an impressive 8-2-3 record this season.
Saturday presents more than another regular-season match. It’s an opportunity for the Dynamo to prove Olsen’s words were more than a promise—that the mistakes are behind them, and the lessons learned can translate into a statement victory against one of the league’s most aggressive attacking teams.
