The Houston Dynamo’s “Noche de México” celebration turned into a nightmare under the Harvest Moon as the Western Conference’s last-place Sporting Kansas City walked away with a convincing 2-0 victory, leaving Houston searching for answers in the international break.
If there is one player eager to put this night behind him, it is Héctor Herrera.
The Dynamo captain’s evening unraveled when he was shown a straight red card for shoving a Sporting Kansas City player during an off-the-ball altercation. The reckless moment forced Houston to play the entire second half with 10 men, dramatically limiting their ability to mount a comeback.
Already trailing by two goals, Houston spent much of the second half chasing the game while trying to conserve energy against a relentless Sporting attack.
The Dynamo found brief sparks through Guilherme, whose creativity helped generate several dangerous moments, but Head Coach Ben Olsen admitted the final product never came. He pointed to a lack of service into the penalty area and acknowledged his players were “running on fumes” as the match wore on.
Olsen did not shy away from addressing Herrera’s actions, criticizing the veteran midfielder’s behavior and making it clear the red card put the team in an even more difficult position.
Sporting Kansas City comfortably managed the closing stages and nearly added to Houston’s misery with several late chances that tested the Dynamo defense.
Despite the disappointing performance, Olsen believes his squad has the character to respond.
“We’ll recover, bounce back, and understand why we’re in this place,” the Dynamo coach said after the match.
Now comes a much-needed reset.
Following the international break, Houston begins a two-match road trip on Saturday, Oct. 10, against Minnesota United FC, before traveling to face San Diego FC on Wednesday, Oct. 14, hoping to leave one of their most frustrating nights of the season behind them.
