Houston Dynamo are preparing for the postseason, but one final challenge stands between them and a favorable playoff position. Saturday’s Decision Day clash against St. Louis City SC could determine not only their final Western Conference seeding but also whether they secure home-field advantage in the opening round.
As predicted by Green, White and Ball, the Dynamo could quietly emerge as a dark horse in the race toward the Western Conference final. The possibility is real, and the belief within the organization remains strong. With a close-knit squad, a solid defensive foundation and a well-structured organization, Houston has the ingredients to make a deeper postseason run. On paper, the pieces are there; now the challenge is putting them together when it matters most.
Houston and St. Louis are tied at 51 points in the Western Conference standings, with the Dynamo sitting fifth on tiebreakers and just one point behind third place. The final standings will determine their opening-round opponent and potentially shape their path through the playoffs. Houston can secure home-field advantage in the opening round through either of two scenarios: a victory over St. Louis, or a draw combined with a San Jose loss to Minnesota and Houston winning the applicable tiebreaker.
However, the Dynamo’s immediate priority should not be speculating about potential opponents. Instead, Ben Olsen’s squad must remain focused on the formula that has carried them through the season: disciplined defending, timely attacking contributions and team cohesion. The international break also offers a valuable opportunity for players to recover, regain fitness and enter the postseason at full strength.
One of Houston’s biggest strengths has been its defensive consistency, anchored by goalkeeper Jonathan Bond. Bond ranks among the league’s top three in clean sheets this season, with 12, tying Tally Hall’s 2012 and Steve Clark’s 2023 single-season club records. Earlier this season, he helped Houston match a league record with a five-match shutout streak, keeping opponents scoreless for 485 consecutive minutes — the second-longest such run in league history.
At the other end of the pitch, Guilherme has become the Dynamo’s attacking difference-maker. He has contributed to 26 of Houston’s 43 league goals this season, accounting for 60.4% of the team’s total production — one of the highest individual contribution rates in MLS. He also became only the second player in club history to record at least 10 goals and 10 assists in a single season, joining Alberth Elis, who accomplished the feat in 2018 with 11 goals and 10 assists. Additionally, Guilherme became just the second Brazilian player in MLS history to register at least 25 goal contributions in his debut season, following Gabriel Pec in 2024. His ability to deliver both a goal and an assist in seven MLS matches this season further highlights his importance to Houston’s attacking threat.
Despite the standings, the Western Conference remains competitive, and no potential opponent should be taken lightly. The Dynamo will need both sides of their game — Bond’s defensive leadership and Guilherme’s attacking influence — to deliver when the postseason begins.
Playing in front of their home crowd in Houston could prove to be a significant advantage. For Olsen and his squad, the immediate objective is clear: take care of business against St. Louis, secure the best possible seeding and carry their momentum into the playoffs.
The road to the Western Conference final will not be easy, but the Dynamo have reason to believe. Decision Day will determine where they stand when the postseason begins. What happens after that could be the beginning of a much bigger story.
